Located high in the mountainous central region of the Philippine island of Luzon, Baguio City earned the nickname of the “Summer Capital of the Philippines” because of its wonderful climate. Cooled by mountain breezes in the tropical summer, and never freezing during the winter, Baguio is the most developed urban center of Northern Luzon. With its unique climate, Baguio is the only place in the Philippines where string beans will grow, and they are called baguio beans because of that! Loakan Airport is about ten minutes south of the city, and three roads provide access through the surround mountain jungles. Baguio is about a seven-hour drive north of the real capital city of the Philippines, Manila. Remember that the roads are difficult to maintain during the rainy season, when washouts and flooding are a constant threat.
Baguio is a town known for its many universities and colleges. An economic center of trade for the region, Baguio also enjoyed the status of an artists’ colony in the 90’s, and today the high population of college students always keeps things bustling downtown. Sessions Road marks the shopping district, and the Baguio Cathedral and Burnham Park are always popular attractions. The Panagbenga Festival is celebrated every February to highlight the city’s cultural heritage.
On July 16, 1990, the people of Baguio were tested by a severe earthquake. Much of the city was destroyed. Thanks to an international effort, the universities and business of Baguio were rebuilt within a few years, and today the town is busier than ever.
