Lying entirely on a thin peninsula jutting out into Manila Bay, Cavite City is a great place for both seaside relaxation and business. The capital city of the Philippines, Manila, is just 10 miles away to the northeast, and the Cavite peninsula is the site of the Sangley Airport, a part of the former US Sangley Naval Base in Manila, now part of the Philippine military’s facilities. With over one hundred thousand people packed into its low-lying area, Cavite resembles Venice in its emphasis on water transport and its infrastructure problems.
Cavite is also responsible for the administration of nearby Corregidor Island, the site of General Douglas MacArthur’s departure from the Philippines in World War II. Cavite is also home to a unique language, Chabacano, an exotic blend of Spanish, English, and native languages such as Tagalog, beloved by several Cavite poets who fought for its promotion as a national language.
Cavite has several beaches. Swimming and relaxation are best on the eastern side of the peninsula, where several resorts are located. The local fishing craft are beautiful to watch as they slip out into Manila Bay, and the old ruins of the Santa Monica Church, from the Spanish Colonial era, are also worth a look. Visit the Cavite City Library and Museum for more information on the history of the town. The Cavite City Museum is a great place to learn about Philipine history, because the city was a center of resistance to both Spanish and American rule. Many leading politicians from the history of the country got their start in the Cavite District. If you enjoy side trips, visit the town of Kawit at the base of the Cavite Peninsula, and see the Aquinaldo Museum. Enrique Aquinaldo led several rebellions against the United States, when the Philippines first became a US Territory, and the Philippine people are very proud of his legacy of fierce independence.
